Emirates Airlines came into existence on March 15, 1985. It was founded by the Dubai royal family with the support from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Checked Baggage allowance

Emirates uses either Weight concept or Piece concept to determine checked baggage allowance, depending on the routes. Weight concept

Under the weight concept, which is applicable to all routes (except when you travel to and from the Americas and from Africa), passengers can check in as many bags as they like, but not beyond the permissible weight allowance for their travel class. Technically, each baggage must not weigh more than 32 kg.

Emirates generally applies the Peace concept for flights to and from Americas and flights originating in Africa. Under this system, the number of bags and maximum weight per bag determines your allowance.

Additional note: If your ticket was issued before 11 May 2020 and your journey originates in Africa, you can check in two pieces of baggage weighing up to 23 kg each in Economy Special.

Additional guidelines related to checked baggage:

• If the weight of your bags are more than 32 kg, they will not be accepted as checked baggage and must be repacked.
• You will have to pay for excess baggage when weight or piece limits are beyond permissible limits.
• Emirates accepts sports equipment, musical instruments, and other special baggage items, though they are subject to applicable conditions.
• Emirates Skywards Silver, Gold, and Platinum members may qualify for additional baggage benefits depending on their membership tier and route.
• If your travel starts in the U.S. but it is not Emirates, in that case, different rules may apply.
• If you are checking in more than 15 pieces of baggage, Emirates may not be able to transport all of them on the same flight you are traveling, for safety reasons.

Emirates Airlines: Check-in Details

Knowing Emirates check-in timings helps ensure a smooth travel experience. Learn when online check-in opens and closes, airport arrival recommendations, baggage drop options, and mobile boarding pass details before your flight.

Online check in

Emirates online check-in starts 48 hours ahead of your flight time and closes 90 minutes before the scheduled departure of your Emirates flight. You can also add Skywards membership number to earn Miles on your trip. With online check-in, you can also download your mobile boarding pass to your phone. Emirates App or Wallet app serves as a dedicated digital hub that you can use to store, access, and use your flight boarding pass, rather than reaching for your travel document at the airport. 

Airport check-in

Emirates generally recommends passengers to arrive at least 3 hours before the scheduled flight departure for most airports. Better check your ticket for the best time to arrive at the airport. Passengers can drop their bags at self-check kiosks or go to the dedicated desk or staffed check-in counters. Customers traveling from Dubai should drop off their bags 24 hours before the flight departure, or 12 hours before the scheduled departure if they are traveling from the US.

Emirates Airlines: Details about Flight Reservation, Changes, Cancellation, and Refunds

Whether you are booking a new flight, modifying an existing itinerary, or requesting a ticket refund, the airline ensures that passengers access a variety of self-service and customer support options easily.

Booking procedures

Passengers can search, select and purchase flights by visiting the official websites of Emirates. You can also use its official mobile app to book the flight. Emirates offers complimentary date change across all cabins for customers booking flights from 2 April 2026. However, such changes must be within ticket validity and are subject to applicable fees.

Flight changes

Changing or modifying the booking can be done using Manage your booking portal of Emirates  or via their mobile app, where passengers need to furnish details like PNR, last name, select the flight to be modified and pay an applicable fee. Don't forget to check if your booking is eligible for online changes. If not, contact your travel agent, or airline’s Contact Centres if you have directly booked through it. Some changes require payable fees, depending on the fare conditions of your ticket. Passengers can also make changes online for partially used tickets, depending on the fare conditions of their ticket. Also to be noted here  is any change you make online will apply to everyone in your booking. However, passengers are allowed to change seats, book a dietary meal or add services through Manage your booking portal.

Flight cancellations 

Emirates doesn't elaborate much on rules regarding flight cancellation, though it explicitly advises passengers to make any changes to their booking on Emirates through Manage Your Booking portal, where enter your last name and PNR to proceed with the cancellation and pay applicable penalties to get the notification of confirmed cancellation. However, if you have booked an Emirates flight via a third-party travel agency, then cancellation can be done by that third-party provider, as Emirates can’t directly process refunds against cancellation for agency bookings. In addition, if your flight departing from EU airports gets cancelled by Emirates itself, the airline will entitle you with certain Available Assistance and Benefits, depending on eligibility criteria fulfillment. Refunds

Emirates processes refunds against flight cancellation by refunding the eligible amount to the original form of payment followed by the booking cancellation and refund request made by the passenger through Manage your booking portal. Full refund can be granted as long as it is within the conditions of your fare. You can also use the Manage your booking portal to claim the refund against a ticket you have partially used by submitting the refund form, subject to Emirate’s terms and conditions.
